A little over an hour’s drive north from Brisbane, Sunshine
Coast attractions around Noosa include the famed Australia Zoo

Australia Zoo
Home to over 550 animals, this 20-ha zoo has displays of fish,
birds and the world’s oldest captive giant tortoise. The
biggest attraction, however, is the crocodile show. Courtesy

Big Pineapple
Known for its landmark huge pineapple, this long-established
pineapple plantation and macadamia farm offers tours, an animal
nursery, a rainforest walk, picnic grounds and a souvenir shop.

Boreen Point
Set on Australia’s largest saltwater lake, Boreen Point
is a sleepy village that comes alive on regatta weekends when
all number of small craft are on Lake Cootharaba in a series
of races. The Apollonian Hotel, another focus for the village,
is renown for it Sunday spit roast and country pub ambience.
Maleny and Montville
These mountain-top villages, set in the pretty Blackall Range,
are packed with craft galleries, specialty shops, potteries
and cafes and restaurants. The Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve
has excellent views of the dramatic Glasshouse Mountains and
a rainforest walking trail.
Eumundi
This small country town is home to the best art, craft and
produce market in Australia. On Saturday mornings hundreds of
stallholders gather to sell their wares. A smaller market operates
on Wednesdays. The small town of Kenilworth, 32km to the southwest,
has an excellent cheese factory.
Fraser Island
Visit the world’s largest sand island and explore its
heathlands and rainforests, coloured sands, perched lakes and
long, sandy beaches

Pomona
Mt Cooroora forms a dramatic backdrop to this small country
town, about a 30-minute drive northwest of Noosa. On Thursday
evenings the old Majestic Theatre shows the old classic, The
Son of the Sheik, to an organ accompaniment

The Sunshine Coast has many budding vineyards and it is possible
to visit them for a tasting experience.

Yandina and the Ginger Factory
The big attraction here is the Ginger Factory with its ginger-making
display, nursery, cafés and train rides. Yandina Markets,
a genuinely local market held on Saturday mornings, has produce,
plants and second-hand goods. The Ginger Factory, 50 Pioneer
